Description
This masterpiece is typical of the statuary in the round of pre-Columbian Costa Rica. Remarkable from the sculptural point of view, it is also very well preserved. Massive in its proportions, it also exudes a great interiority and a certain gentleness that gives it a character that is both strong and protective. This piece, which is thought to have been placed in a place of worship, comes from the Atlantic side of Costa Rica, a territory on the border between two vast cultural areas, Mesoamerica to the north and Latin America to the south. Although Costa Rican works have been influenced in style by their neighbors as well as by Caribbean art, local artists have developed a unique and distinctive repertoire of which this sculpture is a magnificent example, taking full advantage of the nature of their soil. From the many volcanoes that form the "Pacific Ring of Fire", they drew stones of character, from which they fashioned impressive ceremonial works, imbued with all the power of telluric forces.
