This kneeling figure, carved in the round from a beautiful volcanic rock, comes from the Atlantic side of Costa Rica. It is assumed that these important statues were placed in public squares, in front of ceremonial buildings or in the heart of the residences of the elite. The sculptural qualities and the state of conservation of this piece make it an exceptional work. The man is most likely a shaman wearing a crocodile mask. He is represented in a singular position that gives him a beautiful stature and great strength. His right leg is bent, the foot flat on the ground, while his left leg is kneeling, the shin and the foot brought under the thigh and the buttocks. The muscular legs are widely spread, revealing the genitals. The powerful hands rest on the right knee and on the left upper thigh. Bracelets encircle the wrists, indicating this man's high rank within the clan.
