- From Fang, Dapper Museum, Paris, 1991-1992:
What Western artists have been so sensitive to the apparent simplicity of fang sculptures, this is probably due to the fact that they found echoes of their own preoccupations focused on the representation of the body and the face that had become for them places of experimentation. Discovering these masks, the origin and function of which they most often did not know, which did not matter to them at all, the artists were presented with expressive faces, but which denied any psychologism. Indeed, the design of fang masks, whether the general shape is round or stretched, is based on a bias of stylization of lines, and on the alternation of hollows and reliefs. There is therefore a deliberate choice on the part of the sculptor, who seems little concerned about the physiognomic likelihood, to value certain formal elements to the detriment of others: the slits of the eyes are barely marked and are not very open; the mouth is reduced to its simplest expression; most often it is integrated into the contour of the mask.
